It is home to a small population of yellow-eyed penguins, and fur seals are often on the rocks at either end of the beach.br/br/Tavora Reserve includes a prominent coastal headland called Bobby’s Head, and a small wetland and stretch of sandy beach and dunes. Named after the local Yellow-eyed Penguin colony, the Maori name 'tavora' or 'hoiho' means quot;noise shouterquot;.br/br/Intensive farming practices over the decades has destroyed most of the natural vegetation, however since 2001 there has been emphasis on restoring the beach and dune system to its natural state aswell as plantings along the hillsides, stream banks and wetlands. Essential to this process is the replacement of introduced marram grass with the native golden sedge/pikao.
