Kapiti Island is located off the west coast of the lower North Island of New Zealand. The island is the site of Kapiti Island Nature Reserve and adjoins the Kapiti Marine Reserve.br/br/Owing to the close proximity of Wellington, there are regular tourist trips to the island but these are restricted to 50 people per day to minimise associated environmental impacts. Kapiti is an especially popular destination for birdwatchers due to it hosting a number of threatened bird species as well as having no natural mammalian predators; resulting in the birds being more trusting.
