Westies Hut is certainly unique and a definite highlight for many trampers exploring the Waitutu Forest wilderness. It is located only 2 km before Big River in a sea cave at Prices Harbour, accessed by a narrow trail winding around the cliffs. br/br/The hut was initially built by a fisherman as a landbase for his craypots. Following the end of this era, a hermit named 'Westy', lived there for 5-6 years before returning to civilisation, whereupon the hut fell into disrepair. Another southland local decided to restore the hut and reached an agreement with the Department of Conservation where the hut was to be suitably maintained and is a public hut that travellers can stay in and experience.br/br/Westies Hut is accessed via the South Coast Track that stretches from the edge of Te Waewae Bay to Big River.
