The Stewart Island Robin (Petroica australis rakiura) are accepted as a subspecies of the South Island Robin, one of three forms of the New Zealand Robin, each found on one of the main islands. They are a sparrow-sized bird and inhabit native forest, manuka scrub and also patches of introduced pines and gardens. As well as being insectivorous, their naturally tame and inquisitive nature brings them into campsites and picnic areas where they readily pick up scraps and much of their time is spent upon the ground searching for food.
