The Campbell Island Teal (Anas nesiotis) is a small, flightless, nocturnal species of dabbling duck endemic to the Campbell Islands. In 1975 a single population of less than 50 birds was rediscovered on Dent Island, a small (23 hectare) islet near Campbell Island. Eleven individuals from here were taken to New Zealand and a successful captive breeding programme has seen the population significanlty increase. So after an absence of more than a century, a series of return-transfers of 105 birds from 2004-2006 with recent monitoring has identified these birds to be thriving in their ancestral homeland back on Campbell Island.
