The New Zealand Kaka (Nestor meridionalis) is a medium sized parrot endemic to New Zealand. It is closely related to the Kea, but has darker plumage and is more arboreal being commonly found within forested lowlands and coastal areas. The birds are mainly diurnal but are active at night during fine weather or a full moon. Flocks of boisterous kākā gather in the early morning and late evening to socialise, with calls including a harsh ka-aa and a whistling u-wiia. It feeds on fruits, berries, seeds, flowers, buds, nectar and invertebrates.
