There are five accepted species of kiwi. This is the Tokoeka (Apteryx australis), formerly known as the South Island Brown kiwi, being a relatively common species of kiwi found from south and west parts of the South Island and Stewart Island. They inhabit native forests and subalpine areas, standing about 45cm high and weighing from 2-3.3kg, with the females being larger than the males. Kiwi are flightless and nocturnal birds endemic to New Zealand. At around the size of a domestic chicken, kiwi are by far the smallest living ratites and lay the largest egg in relation to their body size of any species of bird in the world. The kiwi is a national symbol of New Zealand and this association is so strong that the term "kiwi" is used, all over the world, to describe New Zealanders.
