South Island Robin encountered at Piano Flat.
The South Island Robin (Petroica australis), or Toutouwai (Māori), is one of three forms of the New Zealand Robin, each found on one of the main islands. They are a sparrow-sized bird and inhabit native forest, manuka scrub and also patches of introduced pines and gardens. As well as being insectivorous, their naturally tame and inquisitive nature brings them into campsites and picnic areas where they readily pick up scraps and much of their time is spent upon the ground searching for food.
Piano Flat is part of the Waikaia Forest which is a large island of beech forest, nestled in the mountain farmlands of northern Southland. Piano Flat provides a picnic area, camping ground and several walking tracks. It is also home to various native birds, insects, bats and deer.
