Tomtit 2

Tomtit 2

A curious tomtit encountered at Piano Flat.

The Tomtit (Petroica macrocephala), also known as Miromiro (Maori), is a small passerine bird endemic to the islands of New Zealand, ranging across the main islands as well as several of the outlying islands. There are five subspecies of Tomtit, each species being restricted to each of the following islands or island groups; North Island, South Island, the Snares Islands, the Chatham Islands and the Auckland Islands. The Tomtit is a small bird 13cm long and weighing only 11g, with a large head and a short bill. It is insectivorous and emits a high-pitched “see see see”.

Piano Flat is part of the Waikaia Forest which is a large island of beech forest, nestled in the mountain farmlands of northern Southland. Piano Flat provides a picnic area, camping ground and several walking tracks. It is also home to various native birds, insects, bats and deer.
