The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) was introduced as a game bird to New Zealand in 1905 and is now widespread and common, particularly in lakes, estuaries and lagoons in the South Island. Populations have grown substantially and together with their noisy nature and considerable fouling of inhabited areas, are considered pests. In 2011 their protection as a game resource was removed.

They classically fly in a 'V' formation and emit a double honk in flight or on the water. They breed mainly in grassy mountain valleys or by high country lakes. They build a mound nest with the eggs incubated primarily by the female.
