Paradise Shelduck 1

Paradise Shelduck 1

The Paradise shelduck (Tadorna variegata), commonly called 'paradise duck' or just a 'parry', is a largel duck endemic to New Zealand. It is a conspicuous and colourful species with contrasting male (black head) and female (white head) plumages. They are common from sea level to the high country pastural land over much of New Zealand, particularly around rivers, lakeshores as well as recreational parklands and urban areas.

Excessive hunting in the past severely impacted numbers, however today the paradise shelduck is the second-most abundant waterfowl in New Zealand (after mallard) having undergone a remarkable recent increase in population and distribution. The male gives a di-syllabic goose-like honk when alarmed or in flight, while the female call is more shrill, and often more regular, particularly during flight.
