The Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the largest bird native to Australia, and the second-largest extant bird in the world by height (up to 2 metres), after the ostrich. They are common over most of mainland Australia, while avoiding heavily populated areas, dense forest, and arid areas.
Emus can travel great distances at a fast, economical trot up to 50km/h, and being nomadic, may travel long distances to feed on a variety of plants and insects. Emus are known to ingest stones to grind food in the digestive system.
