The Ranfurly railway station seen here is now a museum and display centre with the railway line closing in 1989. Today the railway line (tracks are removed) is now popular as a major walking and cycling route known as the 'Otago Central Rail Trail'.br/br/Ranfurly is the largest settlement in the Maniototo district of Otago, New Zealand. It lies in dry rough country 430 metres above sea level and is a service town for the local farming community. br/br/The Maniototo experiences large daily and seasonal temperature extremes. Summers and winters are both fierce: temperatures up into the high 30s Celsius in summer, and heavy frosts regularly throughout the winter. The lowest temperature on record in New Zealand at minus 25.6#176;C was recorded at Ranfurly in 1903.
