Auckland from Rangitoto 1

Auckland from Rangitoto 1

An expansive outlook from the summit of Rangitoto Island over Auckland City. Rangitoto was formed by a series of eruptions around 600 years ago. The volcano itself is not expected to become active again, although future eruptions are likely within the volcanic field. Rangitoto is the most recent and the largest of the numerous volcanic cones in the Auckland area.

Auckland is one of the few cities in the world to have harbours on two separate major bodies of water. The central part of the urban area occupies a narrow isthmus between the Manukau Harbour on the Tasman Sea and the Waitemata Harbour on the Pacific Ocean. The Auckland metropolitan area is the largest and most populous urban area in New Zealand with around 1.4 million residents - 31 percent of the country's population.
