Wolf spider casting web 1

Wolf spider casting web 1

Wolf Spider from the Anoteropsis genus (species unknown)
Pororari Valley, Westland, New Zealand.

This small forest spider was busily generating and casting long strands of web whilst utilising a breeze to direct these fine strands across the forest path. These strands were normally invisable to the naked eye until the angle to the sunlight filtering through the forest would catch a kaleidoscope of colour reflected from the fine strands. Every so often the spider would stop and move in either direction along the grass head, perhaps sensing a difference in the wind direction, striving to keep the strands airbourne until the desired length was attained. Eventually the spider suddenly 'casts off' and seemingly glides along the strands across the 10 feet over open trail to land on some small branches on an adjaent beech tree.
