Waipapa Point and a lighthouse is located on the southern coastline at Waipapa Point, Southland. It is also a popular haul-out site for sea lions.br/br/Waipapa Point marks the scene of New Zealand's worst civilian shipwreck. On 29 April 1881, 131 people were drowned when the passenger steamer Tararua, was wrecked on a reef off the point. Only 20 people survived the disaster.
